Hitachi Rail, Angel Trains, and TransPennine Express have successfully tested a battery-powered ‘railcar’ as a sustainable alternative to diesel engines for trains. The trial took place in northern England, using a train with 700 kW capacity and a battery system equivalent in weight to a diesel setup. The electric train reached speeds of 120 km/h and operated with a 70 km electric range, ensuring passenger safety. The test runs showed cost savings of 35-50% compared to diesel trains. This advancement paves the way for fully electric trains that can recharge at stations and hybrid trains for longer routes. Future enhancements aim to achieve battery recharges that cover 100-150 km, offering zero-emission possibilities.
